Women's Health is a very important issue but doesn't get talked about often enough. Women often neglect or don't give enough attention to conventional symptoms that they experience because they're busy with their careers and raising families.
Many women will dismiss any symptoms that they think are common or normal. However, what start out as typical symptoms could be early signals that there are underlying issues that need to be addressed and looked into more in-depth.
Below are several tests that should be run throughout your life to make sure everything is functioning properly.
The first test that you should have done is a thyroid panel. It's a simple blood test and can look at whether your thyroid is functioning at optimal levels. Your thyroid is vital because it helps regulate the body and energy. If your thyroid is overactive or underactive, you can experience a whole host of problems including trouble with weight, energy, sleep, and memory and concentration. If you are constantly feeling extremely fatigued, you will want to have your doctor order these tests.
A woman’s fertility is also important to consider. Whether you are single and want to have kids in the future, aren’t done having kids, or are having trouble conceiving, you will want to get these tests done. The test you would want to run would be a hormone panel. The tests would include Estrogen, Testosterone, Progesterone, FSH, and LH. It is crucial to make sure you preserve and protect your fertility. These tests should indicate if there are any underlying issues that could affect your fertility.
Women should also have a Pap test to rule HPV and cervical cancer. This should be discussed and performed at an annual gynecological examination. Pap tests do not need to be run every year as long as you have had normal Pap results previously. At this appointment, your doctor will also discuss with you based on your age and family history whether you should have a mammogram done. This is another critical test that can save lives.
Stress plays a toll on everyone’s lives. While stress is normal, too much can also wreak havoc on you and your body. That is why women should make sure they are getting their blood pressure tested regularly. The doctor should be taking your blood pressure at every appointment. If you are someone with a family history of hypertension, you should buy a home monitor and check it daily. That way if issues arise, you can notify your doctor immediately.
Every woman beginning in her early 30’s should have an electrocardiogram or EKG done. This will give you a baseline and will be nice to compare to down the road if anything looks suspicious. An EKG is monitoring your heart and making sure there are no irregularities. Heart disease is a major killer of women and can be prevented with screenings. Unfortunately, most doctors miss it or misdiagnosed this condition because heart disease presents very differently in women.
Last but not least, women should have a fasting blood glucose test run and a hemoglobin A1C test. You want to rule out any possible blood sugar issues before they become more serious. Blood sugars can be regulated with proper nutrition and exercise. When out of whack, blood sugars can cause tiredness, dizziness, weight gain, insulin resistance, and if not properly treated lead to diabetes.
Prevention is key in staying healthy and fit for years to come. Listen to your body, and if you are not feeling your best, you need to investigate. So remember these tests, and discuss when they should be run with your healthcare professional.
